Ok, so with all the questions i get asked on a day to day basis about DK tanking, how to spec, why etc etc, i have decided to start up a small (yes small) blog that will hopefully help alot of people.
Due to demand, ive brought forward the first post on blood tanking, the post is not as polished as i would of personally liked it, so apologies for that.
Ok, so with alot of changes going into the 3.0.8 patch, there are a few noticeable differences being introduced to the blood tree.....
Blood aura, presence and deathpact's healing effects have been doubled
Heart strike has been changed to a cleave ability to help blood with AE tanking
Bloody strikes see's bonus damage to pestilance added to its current effects
Vampiric blood will increase healing received by 50% and also add 20% health (last stand anyone?)
Dancing Rune Weapon cost has been changed from 60RP to 40RP
Along with those changes we have some baseline tanking ability changes
Icebound fortitude's effects have been decreased from 50% down to 20%, however this will scale more with defence (around 35% at 540 defense). The stun immunity will stay.
Frost presence's bonus armor has been increased from 60 to 80% and magic reduction increased from 5 to 15%
Anti-Magic shell has had its cooldown reduced from 60 seconds to 45
Pestilence no longer has a cooldown
Rune strike's damage as been decreased from 200% to 150% however the threat has been increased to 150% from 100%
New runeforge skill - rune of the stoneskin gargoyle (2h) will give 25 defense skill and 2% stamina.
So from those changes, blood is going to be getting a considerable AE threat buff, so i personally have decided to go with the current spec for raid tanking.
Blood patch 3.0.8
So what i have from this spec is :
6% stamina increase, 6 Expertise skill
4% of the damage done is recived back to that person in healing
A 22% base chance to reduce direct magic damage done by 30%
A 15% damage reduction on an attack that would take me below 35% health
Lichborne
I havnt taken DRW for a reason, DRW will not increase the threat done by a deathknight, they have there own threat table.
Also, please bear in mind that this is a raid tanking spec, the majority of bosses both raid and instances are single target, i have focused on singled target talents while not gimping myself too much on AE threat for trash. I have done some tests both on live and the PTR with regards to a full HS rotation or using oblits (no deathrunes), On the PTR i did have the oblit glyph aswell.
A full HS rotation is hard to keep up, if you make a mistake, an attack misses, a knockback effect or you have to use a death rune on something else (ie vamp blood etc etc) your DPS/TPS will fall quite a bit, however with an oblit rotation, it is alot more forgiving with mistakes, misses, resists and general boss movement while doing roughly the same damage.
Vampiric blood glyph'd in 3.0.8 will increase its duration from 20 seconds to 30, meaning that you will be able to keep it up half of the time if needed.
Sudden doom some will argue is a wasted talent, however i see it purely as free TPS, and when tanking, free TPS is good.
Mark of blood, for tanking i dont find very useful, it lasts 20 seconds, with the gear i have at present, self buffed, i have 58% avoidance so its usefulness is going to be neglegable.
Please be aware that currently in the PTR and Live there is a bug present with Spell deflection and Anti-Magic shell, if Spell deflection procs while AMS is active, it will cancel out the effects of AMS and you will only receive the benefit of spell deflection.
What i will try to include on there is a guide to what talent does what, why to take x y and z talents, answer any questions i can related to DK's and how DK tanking in general works.
so.. if you have any questions regarding ur DK in its current form, just ask in the comments section on the first post and i will try my best to answer them all along with a spec analasys in a day or two
the whole point of the post on there atm is to get community feedback on what they WANT to know, there will be little point of me posting tanking specs for all 3 trees and explaining the talents if people want to know WHY those specs are how they are.
i dont want to sit there and dictate to people what they should use or what is "best", the whole point is to help people who arent sure on there spec, what gear to go for, what gems to stack or anything like that.
Sure, im going to eventually post a tanking spec for all 3 tree's and explain the choices between the talents and clear up a few misconceptions. ie. bcb for tanking and necrosis just do not work.
