Looking down the line we currently have plans to release a content patch that will allow players to fight Arthas and possibly kill him. We're not really sure how we're going to handle that just yet, but we're excited about bringing this chapter of Warcraft to a close. That'll be really interesting going forward because of how central Arthas has been to this era of Warcraft.
VeryGE: Will you also be bringing other stories to an end and moving into the future of the Warcraft world?
J. Allen Brack: Sure. We'll be ending the Scarlet Crusade and we'll also be introducing new stories. We're bringing in a lost tribe of Tauren and starting to explore their storyline. The storyline is a big part of what makes WoW what it is.
VeryGE: World of Warcraft launched with minimal open-world PvP without much in the way of gameplay dynamics to support it. Since then you've pushed really hard to create a viable PvP experience through the Arenas, Battlegrounds and some World PvP. How are you evolving the PvP experience in Lich King and where do you see it going from here?
J. Allen Brack: PvP is one of those interesting things where you're always learning and you're never really sure what's going to be hugely successful and what lessons you're going to learn as people hit level 80. Obviously the big thing in Lich King is Lake Wintergrasp, which is the open-world PvP zone. A lot of people have been asking for more World PvP and a little less Battleground and a little less Arena. We've added vehicle siege technology which is pretty integral to both Wintergrasp and the new Battleground so I think our answer will be pretty exciting.
As for the future, we'll be watching PvP very closely and seeing how it works out and I'm sure we'll learn a lot of lessons along the way. That's really what will shape the future of WoW PvP. Ask me in a couple of months and I'll have a better answer.
VeryGE: World of Warcraft has a PvE gameplay track and a PvP track and where the two have come together there's been some conflict, mostly due to the imbalance in gear on the part of the raiders. You've worked quite hard to balance that disparity. Going forward, do you see the game remaining that way, or are you ever going to try to bring the two game types together into some type of cohesive whole?
J. Allen Brack: I don't think we think about the game exactly the way you describe it. We tend to think of gameplay as different buckets that players inhabit. There's questing and leveling which 100% of players are a part of. Then there's the five-person dungeon, which is where people who like to participate with a small group of friends are. There's the 10-person dungeons for people who like larger challenges and better rewards. Then there's the hardcore PvE player who enjoys the 25-person raids. Even PvP play can be divided up into Battlegrounds and Arena players.
There are very few people who only stay in one of them. Most people do a little bit of everything and when we develop we try to develop content and systems for each type of player. We definitely don't see it as a PvE vs. PvP situation. We see it as "How are we going to support the type of player who like to do this and how are going to support the type of player who like to do that?"
VeryGE: If you could give one piece of advice to players to help them hit the ground running as they enter Wrath of the Lich King, what would it be?
J. Allen Brack: [laughs] For me, one of things that I'm going to do is try to get as many achievements as possible as I level up. One of the things that I've found is that trying to go back and do a lot of these achievements is actually pretty difficult, so players should level up with achievements in mind as opposed to trying to do it as fast as possible.
VeryGE: I guess it's tough to get people to go back to Stratholme at this point.
J. Allen Brack: [laughs] Depends on who you are. I've gone back to Strat a dozen times for my own stuff and helping other people get their achievements.
