>> Knight of the Blazing Sun Preview warhammer online Page 1      12/2/2008 3:28:49 AM

So, Order finally got a Human tank. What’s the big deal? Well, Order players don’t seem to naturally gravitate towards the available tank classes the way Destruction does. Dwarves typically only appeal to certain types of players, we’ll call them freaky Dwarf-lovers, and Elves are a bit too effeminate for some. So where’s the happy medium been? He’s coming next week (For those of you who weren’t lazy and did the full Heavy Metal event! The rest of you: get busy or you’ll be drooling come next week!), and he’s the middle of the road, non-outrageous (except for his plumed hat) human tank: the Knight of the Blazing Sun.

Like the Blackguard I previewed last week, the Knight of the Blazing Sun is steeped in backstory. The Knights were established after a critical battle in defense of Magritta, which was miraculously won when, as a result of a tremor, a large statue of Myrmidia fell upon the advancing forces. The Knights of the Blazing Sun were a secular order of mercenaries before this event, but from this point on they worshiped the goddess Myrmidia. During the desperate battle at Magritta, men and women of all status joined in arms, and following its events the Knights of the Blazing Sun regarded anyone who can prove their competence in battle as an equal. They are not an order made up of nobles, but of capable men and women from all social status and walks of life.

What really differentiates the Knight of the Blazing Sun from your typical knight in shining armor is the particular method in which they carry out their duties. A Knight of the Blazing Sun is a tactician before anything else. Followers of Myrmidia are forbidden from entering battle unless all strategies have been considered for every eventuality. While Knights of the Blazing Sun are more than capable combatants, brains are appreciated over brawn, and they are known to use just about any trick in the book to win a battle. Their sole objective is absolute victory.

The Knights roam in small groups, or even as individuals, lending their aid wherever it is accepted. A single Knight has been known to assume command in dire situations only to bring a surprise victory through their cool, calculated approach to warfare. When the Knights do battle together though, they are truly a force to be reckoned with, and this is reflected very well in Warhammer Online.

In WAR, the Knight of the Blazing Sun is the tank class for the Empire. Like their mirror, the Chosen, their mechanic is the use of auras, or Battle Commands as they are referred to for the Knight. Both the Chosen and Knight of the Blazing Sun are twister classes, though not by necessity. Twisting allows them to activate their different auras in succession to create multiple effects in battle. Again, this is by no means necessary, Mythic has made it clear a Chosen or Knight player could do well with only one or two auras, but those who go the extra mile are rewarded. I personally don’t twist, I’d rather not get carpal tunnel. To be fair though, the aura effects linger for 12 seconds after you cast them, so it isn’t truly hard to work 2-3 auras into a rotation.

For the last week or so I’ve experienced the Knight of the Blazing Sun in Tiers One to Four, and so we’ll be talking about the Knight a bit more in-depth than the Blackguard, who I had only experienced in Tier One at the time.

The Knight of the Blazing Sun possesses three mastery paths, a damage line (Conquest), a debuff line (Vigilance), and a buff line (Glory). The mastery paths are interesting in that none are truly a clear tank line. Though, I’m sure many will say that the Vigilance line fills that niche, as its abilities lend well to that mentality through the focus on shield use and the eponymous “Vigilance” ability, which as of this writing reduces incoming damage by a whopping 50%!

In my experience, the Knight was underwhelming in Tier One, he really drained his AP out and it was a pretty sluggish experience in all honesty that I didn’t really enjoy. Playing the class with the Tier Three (level 20) templates, I found the Knight to be a lot more capable and I was able to put together a pretty hardy Vigilance build by that level, so let’s talk about that briefly.
